At Melafrica, our research effort focuses on the efficient, reproducible, and robust manufacturing of high-quality medicines in Africa, with focus on the production of active pharmaceuticals ingredients (APIs). APIs are active ingredients of the tablets and capsules people take. At the moment, there is severe and widespread shortage of many life saving drugs. This shortage can be attributed the following principal factors:

1)      There is negligible local manufacturing of modern drugs within the African continent.

2) There is no local supply of APIs.

3)      Most drugs are imported from Asia, Europe, or the Americas and such importations require hard currency, which most African countries cannot afford.

Overcoming the shortage of drugs within the African continent can only achieved by facilitating local manufacturing of such medicines within Africa. To achieve this, we need trained workforce, adequate infrastructure, machinery and equipment, the participation of diaspora Africans and friends of Africa, strong partnership of local and regional governments.
